MY PULSATING BALLS
It's that time again where I sit back in my Shutter Go.. Cavern with the heating on full whack. My electronic cigarette is filled with finest juices in West Yorkshire, the cat sits on my lap clawing at my cold hands as I type. I pour myself a big Cup o' Joe & gaze into my pulsating crystal ball over a 2016 of pure creative awesomeness.
The funny thing is when I began pondering my last year. It was hard to see anything hugely impressive about my achievements. But then as I delved deeper into those moments shared with love struck strangers I now proudly call friends. The delusional mist cleared & what was left was a vision of self improvement, a brand that now reflects me & my work. & a year jam packed with memories, features & some of the best times I have had as a professional camera toting finger wizard.
Just like my 2015 Year in Review. I'm gonna break up all the good stuff into chapters to make it easier to digest. I wouldn't want you guys overloading on Hors d'oeuvres before the main course now would I?
Here's to 2016... A year of evolution.
STORYTELLING FOR THE LOVE STRUCK
"Do you not get tired of weddings?" people ask. "You must have seen everything by now?" & as I pick out just a small percentage of memories from my 2016 couples there is a resounding answer of Hell No! When I shot my very first wedding in 2012, I wasn't aware of the journey I was about to undertake. For me wedding photography has not only allowed me to be there to witness some of the most incredible moments, locations & people. But it has also shaped the person I am 4 years on.
This year has seen me capturing moments in the hazy sunshine of picturesque abbeys. Chasing the harsh light within inner cities. From rooftops to coastal waves I have been there for those moments that matter most.
I have shared your Summers in the woods, Watched you dance into the night. Helped you put your button holes in. Carried your flowers & sometimes even you. I've given away at least 3 umbrellas. Hit smoke bombs in the Autumn. I have broken cameras, Watched you laugh, Cry & felt the love of that long embrace.
I have seen what you have seen & sometimes even more.
I am Shutter Go Click Photography. You are Shutter Go Click Photography & this is 2016...
NO ONE WAY STREET
It's that time of the year again where the weddings wind down & I head out into the cold with some awesome peeps to make some memories. I've always loved engagement shoots. Mainly because I'm not as concerned with the time constraints so frequently involved with the actual wedding day. I get to try out new badass techniques whilst trying my hardest to look like I know what the hell I'm doing. Plus of course I'm able to spend a heap more time with you love struck humans before tying the knot.
This ain't a one way street of course. It's not just me that gets to know you. But you guys get to know me. How I work, How frickin amazing you look together & how by the time we are done shooting. You guys are gonna be soooo much more relaxed about the actual wedding photos.
BOATS N' HOES
This year I was also honoured to be invited to share in two of my good mates most awesome of proposals in Leeds City Centre. Gaz proposed to Katy of Hula Hair fame by sailing down one of Leeds' busiest streets riding a custom built sail boat on wheels & followed by a huge crowd of their bestest buds! All whilst playing the tune Boats N' Hoes from Stepbrothers. Ya couldn't make this stuff up.
I can't bloody wait to see what they have in store when I photograph their wedding in 2018. Whoop!
NO MORE WHITE BACKGROUNDS
This year I've managed to fill in the gaps between weddings & engagements with some of the most awesome family sessions. After running a competition earlier in the year to win a free portrait shoot. I was inspired to make families part of the every day here at Shutter Go Click. No longer do you have to be getting married to come home with some frickin magical pics.
An hour in the life of you. From your home to wherever you roam.
Here's to 2016 in portraits.
A FRIEND IN NEED IS A FRIEND INDEED
Those who have followed me for a little while know how much I bloody love collaborating with the tons of magnificent folks in the wedding industry. I've made some of my best friends shooting solely for a combined vision. This year has seen my first big editorial in Belle Bridal Magazine with a Marie Antoinette inspired feature. I've lit up the White Cloth Gallery in Leeds with Neon & even shot a brand new wedding collection for my good mate Hayley over at the spectacular Rolling in Roses. (Full post coming soon)
I already have a couple more shoots lined up for early this year, But in the meantime here is 2016.
BLOW MY OWN TRUMPET
What retrospective would be complete without me having the chance to wax lyrical about all of those awesome blogs, magazines & accolades that have given me a giant head this past year.
Here's the lowdown on my cranium multiplication for 2016. Don't forget to hit the links on each article to read all those magnificent stories beyond the Megapixel.
~ Ryan was a better photographer than we could have wished for & we got on so well right from that first meeting in our local pub. His pictures are truly beautiful & not only can he capture an image like a piece of art, he is able to capture people at their most relaxed. We could not be happier with the service he provided & the end result of some truly amazing photographs. ~
~ Our photographer was Ryan at Shutter Go Click Photography & really, I don’t need to say anything, the photos speak for themselves. Ryan was fantastic, calm, attentive, completely unobtrusive & took the most wonderful photographs of our day. We want to print & hang them all in frames! I don’t know if we’ll ever stop looking at them. ~
~ Ryan at Shutter Go Click Photography was an absolute diamond! We decided early on that we didn’t want the usual standing around pictures, more the documentary style with a rustic edge & we were so lucky to not only find Ryan but for him to have our date available. ~
~ Ryan of Shutter Go Click is incredibly personable, so he made everyone at the wedding feel completely at ease – his happy & laid-back mannerism really chimed with so many of the guests & made sure that he got some excellent candid shots & positive feedback from all the guests. ~
~ Their joy is so perfectly captured by the wonderful Ryan of Shutter Go Click Photography. Ryan’s relaxed, artistic style captures moments of emotion & expression as well as plenty of laughs & quirky, alternative portraits. ~
~ I just love the simplicity of this wedding featured on Rock my Wedding this week from Shutter Go Click Photography. The setting is beautiful & the wedding is super pretty in this woodland setting. ~
~ I cannot recommend Ryan from Shutter Go Click Photography highly enough. I knew from the moment I saw his work I wanted him to photograph our wedding, & he did not disappoint. By far the best money we spent, it was worth every penny to have someone as talented & fun to be around as he was. ~
~ I have a feeling Shutter Go Click Photography’s job was made very easy with the picturesque surroundings of Camp Katur. Each image looking so enchanting & pretty. Telling the story of Eleanor & Rob’s romantic & fun filled wedding day perfectly. ~
~ Every inch of this Left Bank Leeds wedding involved DIY projects made with the help of friends & family, including the floral design, calligraphy, & an epic dessert table! Photographer Shutter Go Click beautifully captured every moment of this Leeds wedding. ~
~ We've got some down right beautiful composition & tones to share with you today. ~
~ It’s so refreshing when a bridal shoot hits my inbox and it has a really cool, different vibe about it. Mixing neon brights, tropical flowers, an industrial backdrop and cool bridal separates ~
~ Glancing through the work of Ryan Learoyd is an easy, quick introduction to the man himself - alternative, fun and creative. With his artistic aesthetic and rich, dream-like hues, all of his photos are distinct and identifiable. Having Ryan capture your wedding means working collaboratively to create something unique; wedding photos that look like no one else’s. Ryan consistently brings an ease to the environment, perfect for even the most camera-shy of people. As a driven, hardworking professional with a big heart and friendly demeanor, Shutter Go Click Photography delivers on all aspects of what makes someone a great artist and person. ~
~ Be yourselves, do it your way, enjoy every second. ~
DARE TO BE BOLD STYLED PHOTOSHOOT ~ LOCO MAGAZINE ~ APRIL 2016
~ This shoot should inspired all of us to break our own bubbles & dare to be bold ~
~ I absolutely love clashing and modern wedding inspiration shoots, where many styles fuse together and fizz with pure energy. No theme, no rigidity, no rules; everything included. ~
MARIE ANTOINETTE NINE PAGE PHOTOSHOOT ~ BELLE BRIDAL MAGAZINE ~ SPRING/SUMMER 2016
~ Shutter Go Click Photography has always set out to create contemporary photography with a vintage vibe. Of course not just with my alternative take on wedding photography & portraiture, but even in the brand I have crafted. & What better way is there to really go to town on this idea than bringing Marie Antoinette into the 21st Century. ~
~ From the day we met up with Ryan in Leeds, we just knew he was the right fit. At the wedding he was just like another one of the guests, he got on with everyone so well & made us all feel so comfortable. We hadn’t wanted to do staged photographs but we’re glad Ryan encouraged us to! They’ve come out looking like a fairy tale & we’re both in love with them. ~
~ Alice & Scott's story warmed our hearts & we are so excited to be following them on the final five months of their teepee wedding journey. ~
~ If you have decided to try and make your wedding a little different & a representation of your-awesome-selves, only select the vendors, guests, & a photographer that are in for the ride ~
COME TO THE DARK SLIDE
Early 2016 I finally found the time to create a new home for the Shutter Go Click Photography Blog in the form of Dark Slide of the Moon. I had been tied into using Tumblr as a way to express the stories behind my photography for a looooong time. 6 whole years in fact. But I realised in order to grow, simplify posting & not be inundated with teenage angst or Harry Potter Memes. I needed a new place in which to find a voice.
There was a day not so long ago when my wife Hannah said to me "Ryan... You are more than just a photographer." Dark Slide of the Moon was born to be just that. A blog dedicated to the creative wonderings into the dark slide of Shutter Go Click Photography. The artistic alternative to traditional wedding photography & portraiture in Yorkshire & beyond. I like to see Dark Slide of the Moon as the badass younger brother of Shutter Go Click... An alter ego of sorts. Where a photograph isn't just about the immediacy of the moment but serves a catalyst for further exploration.
The funny thing is Dark Slide of the Moon hasn't even began to reach what I initially planned it to become. Straight after launching I hit wedding season & boom! Every blog post is devoted to my awesome couples. But now as my workflow gets quicker & I have a greater understanding of the format. There's gonna be heap more content coming your way.
A special mention must also go to the awesome Chloe O' Malley who designed not only this the Dark Slide of the Moon logo. But also inspired me to re imagine the branding for Shutter Go Click Photography as a whole.
SHUTTER GO.. EVOLUTION
Those eagle eyed few amidst the followers of my work will recognise the connection to my Dark Slide of the Moon blog logo. & once again the mind blowing skills of my tattooist Chloe O'Malley has put to paper what could once only linger in the back of my cranium as mere ideas.
For a while now I have wanted a logo that reflected Shutter Go Click Photography's brand message. Not just another circle with a camera stuck in the middle but something more. Back when Dark Slide of the Moon was created I knew I wanted both the blog & Shutter Go Click logos to interconnect & have a relationship in some way.
I also wanted a little nod to both me & my wife Hannah on our wedding day which I actually have a tattoo of. This led me to the idea of having a similar design to that. Then adding the wolf & stag motifs amidst the illuminating backdrop of the moon & landscape.
I'm not a studio based photographer. The weddings I tend to do see me everywhere from luscious green woodlands, rolling hillsides, beautiful Summer gardens to right smack bang in the middle of urban England. I wanted a logo that would give a taste of that adventure that so often I feel my work represents.
The Stag & the Wolf in an embrace is a nod to defiance of convention in Shutter Go Click Photography. That even your most special of days & the way it is photographed does not have to follow convention. That even in the most unlikely of surroundings two love struck humans can bring those memories home.
I'll leave you guys with some of the new USB'S & stationary from Shutter Go Click Photography available to my awesome couples from 2017 onwards.
So what does 2017 hold for Shutter Go Click Photography. Well first & foremost I'm almost fully booked with a whole new flock of amazing couples. So if you're thinking of getting in touch about your wedding this year. Don't hold back & drop me an email right this minute. We can grab a brew & have a chat about bringing those memories home.
In April I'm attending my first ever workshop. I get to spend a whole week with other awesome photographers over in the heart of Wales at Snap Photography Festival. I already know that I'm gonna come back feeling more inspired than ever. & as well as a learning experience. It will be all kinds of awesome to kick back & relax with a load of peeps doing the same stuff as me.
Theres also a couple of things in the pipeline I'm gonna keep secret for now. But lets just say I'm so frickin excited for 2017 & beyond & you should be too.
YOUR ARE AWESOME
To wrap up this look back over 2016 there is no way I could do it without thanking every single last one of you. From every couple who put their faith in me to capture their most precious of days. To every human on the other end of that screen that liked, shared, commented, laughed, tagged, recommended or simply felt a little tingle of excitment or inspiration from my years worth of storytelling. You are the ones that make this adventure far from a solo experience.
You are the donkey to my vast desert. The Zeppelyn to my led & the click to my shutter...
& YOU ARE ALL FUCKING AWESOME.
Until next time...
